2015

I can't believe it's 2015.

I can't believe the last time I wrote a blog entry was in October.
(And in case you were wondering, the wasps never returned, and I've been sting-free!)

It's hard for me to even remember what happened in 2014. It pretty much flew by.
But I'll try my hardest to recollect any good moments.

January
  • Trevor proposed to Mekayla!!

February
  • My crush on Jimmy Fallon quadrupled. He took over The Tonight Show and completely crushed it. I don't miss an episode. He's so amazingly brilliant, and my new life goal is to take a trip to New York and be an audience member in his show.
  • I ruined multiple pinterest recipes and finally realized that either those recipes suck or I don't know how to cook...
  • Derrick proposed to Kaylee!

March
  • My first year coaching track took off into full swing.
  • SPRING BREAK! Two years ago, James and I ventured to Austin. This year we went a little farther from home. Little Rock, Arkansas. We went to the zoo, a comedy club, and we tried Vietnamese coffee (delicious!) for the first time.
  • I bought Winnifred (my iPhone 5S).
  • I played Bingo for the first time (the beginning of my addiction).
  • I ran a glow in the dark 5K with Yvette and made my first, and probably only, trip to the Dallas Market Center. Fifteen floors of nothing but shopping! Such a neat experience.

April
  • My grandma had been fighting cancer and lost her battle. We made a trip to South Dakota to celebrate her life with all of our family and friends.
  • I tried a new "cleanse" diet that eliminated coffee from my daily menu. That didn't last long.
  • I also tried a high pressure tanning bed that left my body looking like a lobster. Never again.

May
  • Track ended. Regionals ate our kids up, and no one advanced.
  • I ran another 5K with Nick. Technically he beat me, but I led the entire race. Totally unfair.
  • James graduated college and passed his registry exam, so he started hitting the job hunt. So proud of him! For all of his hard work, I bought him an iPad, so we've been able to facetime each other which is a lot more convenient than a phone call.

June
  • I SURVIVED MY FIRST YEAR OF TEACHING! It actually went by super fast (as is this year).
  • We took a trip with Cody, Vanessa, and Trillanee to Concan and floated the river for the first time.
  • We had our minds blown by the best breakfast food in the WORLD, The Magnolia Pancake Haus in San Antonio. (This past weekend we went to Austin for New Year's Eve and drove an hour and a half out of the way just to eat there.)
  • Ron and Pam moved from Holcomb Circle to the Kiepersol estates, so James and I helped them move and unpack. As a special thanks, they gave us a gift card to eat at the Kiepersol restaurant. It was a great experience, and the food was perfection.
  • We had a girl's trip to Austin for Kyndall's bachelorette party where I floated the river for the 2nd time.
  • My lifetime companion for the past 5 years, my 2006 Pontiac G6 named Rhonda, was sold and replaced by Corrina, my 2013 Ford Escape.

July
  • We spent the 4th at Trevor and Mekayla's house in Owasso.
  • I went to my first coaching clinic and ran into one of my high school besties, Ashlen.
  • We made another trip to South Dakota for the Bures Family Reunion.
  • I shot skeet for the first time.

August
  • I drove down to Rockport for Kyndall's beach wedding.
  • James and I floated the river one last time for the summer.
  • We made a trip to 6 Flags with Nick and Cammie.
  • I finally got my bus driving license.
  • School started for my 2nd year in Jacksonville.
  • James got hired, so now we're both employed with big girl/boy jobs.

September
  • Another trip to Austin for Mekayla's bachelorette party.
  • I got a gym membership (which has almost gone to waste because basketball consumes all my time).

October
  • Trevor and Mekayla FINALLY got married in Owasso, and I got to see a lot of my family from up north again.
  • I got stung by a wasp for the first time.
  • Basketball started, so all my free time no longer exists until May.
  • The new Taylor Swift album was released (1989), and I'm obsessed.

November
  • Derrick and Kaylee got married in Tyler (thus concluding all my 2014 weddings).
  •  Thanksgiving in Nacogdoches was delicious, but it was cut short due to a basketball tournament.

December
  •  James and I celebrated 3 years of dating.
  • I celebrated my 24th year of life.
  • Christmas break spoiled me, but it was so great spending almost an entire week with my family.
  • The distillery tour at Kiepersol kicked my butt.
  • My mom, my Aunt Pam, and I saw the new Annie, and it was soooo cute.
  • Our last trip of 2014. James and I met Ashlyn, Jeremiah, and Julie in Austin for New Year's Eve on 6th Street. And like I said, we had to make a trip to Magnolia, and my first meal of 2015 was miserably delicious.

I don't have any resolutions. I'm not into all that stuff.
But I do hope 2015 brings lots of joy, happiness, and adventure.
Not just to me but to each and every one of you!

Happy New Year!

The war

I love that the weather is finally cooling down. Now I'm able to open my window and save money not running the air conditioner at night.

However, last Thursday and Friday I came home after school to find wasps in my bedroom. I wasn't sure where they were coming from, but then I remembered that when I first moved in, the screen on my window was bent at the top, therefore it wasn't serving it's wonderful purpose of keeping out critters.

I remember I had put in a request to get it fixed, but no one ever got around to it. And honestly, last year it wasn't that big of a deal. But when I woke up Saturday morning and there were SIX wasps in my room, it became a big deal.

I strategically killed all the wasps without getting stung (my box fan took care of 2 of them...I guess they crawled in and got knocked out by the rapidly spinning blades because I keep my fan pressed against the window to suck in all the cool air quicker). I shut my window to prevent anything else from getting in and left for the weekend.

As I was walking to my car, hands full of luggage, I felt a tickle on my lower tricep area. I assumed it was my hair because I was wearing it down, so I did a little head shake number and brushed my arm along my side to relieve the itch. At that moment, I felt an excruciating sharp pain like I've never experienced before.

I got stung.

Bad.

I wasn't sure if I was supposed to take out a stinger because on If I Stay, she gets stung on the palm of her hand, and he sucks the stinger out with his mouth (really, he was just looking for an excuse to kiss her hand in front of her parents...so sweet). Anyways, I started squeezing the sting like a pimple, but nothing was coming out. So I decided to google what to do for a wasp sting.

It said that wasps don't leave a stinger, but DON'T SQUEEZE IT because it spreads the venom quicker...
Awesome.

It swelled up for a little bit, and my arm throbbed all day, but the next day I woke up and was fine.

5 minutes after the sting
When I got home last night, I could see about 20 wasps all huddled around the outside of my window. THANK THE LORD I closed it before I left Saturday. I'm guessing the wasps were huddling around all of our windows to try and feel any heat coming out through the cracks.

So first thing this morning, I wrote a letter explaining the situation and put it in the drop box of the office hoping to get it fixed before I got home from school. When I pulled up after school, I could see that my screen was fixed, but there were still 20-30 wasps crowding my window. When I went in my bedroom, the screen was definitely fixed, but all those wasps were still very alive and too close for my liking, even if there was a window separating us. AND there was a live wasp that must have snuck in while the man was fixing my screen. So I went to the office and told the manager and maintenance man that those wasps were still on my window. He came back and sprayed the outside of my window, but I had my own problem. The live wasp in my room.

I put on a hoodie, pulled the drawstrings to cover my whole face to where I still had visibility, grabbed my Scrubbing Bubbles toilet cleaner, and started spraying up in the top corner of my window. When I finally sprayed it enough to make it drop to the floor, I slammed that wasp with a shoe and flushed him down the toilet.

Hard to tell because of the glare, but this is just a few of the wasps that were lining the outside of my window. I'm extremely lucky that there were only 6 in my room Saturday morning because after seeing this, it could have been MUCH worse!
Hopefully this whole wasp epidemic is over because I don't know how much longer I can handle being worried about whether my window is open or closed.

And if you're wondering, yes, the screen is fixed, but I'm too scared to open the window.

I've been stung once before. I prefer it not to happen again.

Two Days

First of all, I finished reading Gone Girl.

Insane.

So I couldn't wait. I had to go see the movie.

Again, insane.

It's one thing to picture this stuff in your head while you're reading, but it's another to actually see it happening on a screen. I was slightly creeped out multiple times.

I suggest seeing it, but I strongly suggest reading it first because it makes SO much more sense.

Now, on to the main point of the entry...

MY BROTHER AND MEKAYLA ARE GETTING MARRIED IN TWO DAYS.

That's right. Two days. Tomorrow will be here and gone, and then BAM! They're married.

It's so weird! It seems like just yesterday Mekayla was facetiming me, showing off the brand new bling on her left hand.

Tomorrow we head out bright and early to Oklahoma for the rehearsal.

I'm super excited to see all my family and some friends from Sunray, but I'm most excited that these 2 are going to stand up in front of all of us and vow to be together forever. Not to mention I'll finally have a sister!

That's basically it. I just wanted to share my excitement because, well, I'm pretty freakin excited.

True Confessions

1. I've been living alone for 13 months, and I still don't know how to cook a meal that doesn't feed 4 mammoths.

2. I hate the color pink, yet one of my favorite shirts is a salmony-pink color.

3. Out of all the books I've read post-high school and college, roughly 98% of them were only read because the movie trailer looked really good, and I wanted to know how it ended so I could decide whether or not it was worth the money to see it in theaters or wait for Redbox.

4. When people ask what my middle name is and I tell them Patrice, they get a disgusted/confused look on their face as if it's the grossest name they've ever heard. To appease them, I just respond, "I know right?" with a reciprocating disgusted/confused face. I actually really love my middle name because it's so uncommon.

5. And on the topic of names, I think the prettiest girl name ever is Saoirse (pronounced Seer-shuh, meaning "freedom" in Irish), but if I ever named my daughter that someday, she'd probably hate me forever.

6. It takes me 30 minutes to get ready in the mornings. 20 minutes of those 30 are spent on trying to fix my hair.

7. Most days I forget to put on deodorant which I find ironic because I keep a stick at home, at work, AND in my car.

8. I make it a point every summer to watch all 10 seasons of Friends from beginning to end. I've been doing this since high school, not to mention I watch re-runs anytime I see them on TV. So when I say I've seen every episode of Friends at least 10 times, that's not an exaggeration.

9. If it wouldn't make me fat, I'd eat pasta every night for dinner and ice cream for dessert.

10. Where some people wash their sheets once a week, I wash mine maybe once a month.
(Before you judge, I have a theory. I shower every night before I go to bed, so the sheets don't get dirty as often.)

11. I don't like to watch the news or listen to people talk about what's going on in the world because I like to believe we live in a perfect bubble where nothing goes wrong and everyone is nice to everyone.

12. I'm a compulsive picker. If there's an imperfection (scab) for me to pick at, I will. That's why I always have red spots on my chin.

13. I prefer my cookies to be burnt. They have the best flavor when you dip them in milk.

14. As much as I love trying out new dessert/cookie recipes on pinterest, 1 out of every 5 things I make actually tastes decent. The other 4 just end up going straight to the trash.

15. Even though I live alone, I still do the awkward tip-toe-speed-jog after a shower when I forget my towel in another room.

5:30 AM

You know, it's still dark at 5:30 AM.

The temperature is nice and cool at 5:30 AM.

The air is crisp at 5:30 AM.

The town is quiet at 5:30 AM.

The streets are empty at 5:30 AM.

Basically, running at 5:30 AM wasn't as terrible as I expected. We only ran Wednesday and Thursday morning, but both days I felt very energized. I couldn't even go back to bed when I got home around 6, even though I normally wouldn't be awake until 6:40. My mind was already busy processing and prepping for the day. But it was nice. I was able to take my time getting ready.

Today after school I went and got a gym membership. I'm pretty excited. Indoor treadmills, indoor pool, free Zumba, kickboxing, boot camp, and cycling classes. What's not to love??
It's like college all over again, minus being surrounded by all my young college friends.

I don't know why I'm feeling this workout kick. Maybe I'm trying to find something that will consume my afternoons since I pretty much just come home and sit on my couch all night (that is, until basketball starts at the end of October). Maybe I'm a little more sluggish than I used to be. Maybe I'm not as excited about my appearance as I used to be.
I'm not complaining about my size because really I don't consider myself to be fat. I'm actually pretty average-sized, but it's frustrating when I tell people that I need to work out, and they say, "Ugh, shut up. You're so skinny."

Trust me. There's a difference in being skinny and toned.

And I'd like to get back to the Abby-with-6-pack-abs-and-V-cut-hips.

So I guess now that I know 5:30 AM isn't poisonous to my body, I can start waking up early to run with Christy, and mornings that she has volleyball practice I can go to the gym and do some weights. So here's to getting back in shape.
I mean, I do have 2 bridesmaid dresses that I have to wear next month and the month after that, and I think it's pretty important that they both fit...

Ten

1. This is my first 10 on Tuesday post since....probably May. I guess it's time to come back.

2. Knock on wood, but so far this school year is going pretty well. I'm much stricter than I was last year, so I don't get walked on by all the students, and I think that's a pretty positive thing.

3. I said in my last post (about 4 weeks ago) that teachers can eat lunch for free in the cafeteria as long as they stay in the cafeteria. Four of the football coaches and myself have been taking advantage of that every day since day one, and it's amazing. Who ever said cafeteria food was disgusting?

4. I finally have a running buddy. We start tomorrow. She's a new coach this year at the middle school, and it turns out she lives at the same apartment complex as me.

5. The only downside: she wants to run at 5:30...in the morning...as in, before school starts. We never even ran that early for cross country in high school, so this could be pretty interesting. I'll let you know how that goes.

6. Who knows, I may be able to function better if I wake up early and do something productive with myself.

7. My new addiction would have to be pretzels dipped in Nutella. That's healthy, right?

8. Say what you want about the new Taylor Swift song. I will admit, I thought it was a tad annoying when I first heard it, but now it's my jam! I actually pre-ordered the album. October 27th can't come soon enough.

9. And on the subject of music, I know this album has been out for a while, but I'm in love with Miley Cyrus' Bangerz album. Don't judge.

10. By my mom's recommendation (and the intriguingly intense previews), I started reading Gone Girl today during my conference. I'd hate to already assume because I've only read one chapter, but I think it's going to be great.

Bye, summer

A few recaps from the 2nd half of my summer since the last time I wrote was the beginning of July:

  • I passed my bus driving test (hallelujah!).
  • I scored big buying back to school clothes in Shreveport.
  • We went to a family reunion in South Dakota.
  • James and I floated the river one last time.
  • Corrina had her first trip to the doctor (air conditioning went out).
  • I was a part of Kyndall's wedding on the beach in Rockport.
  • Nick, Cammie, Cammie's sister, James, and I went to 6 Flags.
  • I saw the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
  • I saw If I Stay (they added a lot that wasn't in the book).
  • I defeated what levels there are in Candy Crush (it adds 20 new levels like once a month)
  • School started.

That's right. School time already.

My classroom is full, the PowerPoints are prepared...it's here.
One year down, 40 to go.

Our school started a new thing where teachers can eat for free in the cafeteria as long as they sit in the cafeteria, which isn't a big deal because we have our own faculty table.
I'm sure a lot of you are thinking, "Why would you want to eat cafeteria food in a room full of loud kids?"
Hey, I'm a Martin. If it's free and it's edible, I'm there.
My dad and I once snuck over 10 free samples from a vendor in Sam's because no one stopped us, and it was just sitting there waiting to be taken. We couldn't let it get cold.
Plus, it gives me the chance to socialize with teachers that I don't normally see.
And cafeteria food really isn't all that bad. Today they had some killer quesadillas.

That's really all I have for now. It's been a while since I've written, and I really miss it. However, nothing is happening that's important enough to take the time to type it all up.

I'll try to post more often. Surely now that school has started I'll have some good writing material. But until then....

Keep Smiling =)
